A better understanding of how the stock market works

Once upon a time a man appeared in a village and announced to the villagers that he would buy monkeys for $10 each.

The villagers, seeing that there were many monkeys around, went out to the forest and started catching them. The man bought thousands at $10 and, as supply started to diminish, the villagers stopped their effort. He next announced that he would now buy monkeys at $20 each. This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys again.

Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going back to their farms. The offer increased to $25 each and the supply of monkeys became so scarce it was an effort to even find a monkey, let alone catch it! The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at $50 each! However, since he had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would buy on his behalf.

In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers: “Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that the man has already collected. I will sell them to you at $35 and when the man returns from the city, you can sell them to him for $50 each.”

The villagers rounded up all their savings and bought all the monkeys.

They never saw the man or his assistant again.

Today is "Music from 1994" Day

Pseudo-randomly, I’ve elected to only listen to songs from albums released in 1994. Consequently, I’ve discovered that this was a really great year in music. A brief list of albums which qualify for playback today:

  • Aerosmith - Big Ones
  • BNL - Maybe You Should Drive
  • Beastie Boys - Ill Communication
  • Bush - Sixteen Stone
  • Deftones - Adrenaline
  • DMB - Under the Table and Dreaming
  • Enigma - The Cross of Changes
  • Green Day - Dookie
  • Guster - Parachute
  • Hootie and the Blowfish - Cracked Rear View
  • Jeff Buckley - Grace
  • Korn - Korn
  • Live - Throwing Copper
  • Massive Attack - Protection
  • NIN - The Downward Spiral (Halo #8)
  • Pearl Jam - Vitalogy
  • REM - Monster
  • Rusted Root - When I Woke
  • Soundgarden - Superunknown
  • Sting - Fields of Gold
  • STP - Purple
  • The Cranberries - No Need to Argue
  • The Rolling Stones - Voodoo Lounge
  • Toad the Wet Sprocket - Dulcinea
  • Weezer - Weezer
  • Weird Al Yankovic - Permanent Record

Sad, though, as I look back. I don’t think I appreciated any of this music 14 years ago. I did own Dookie on cassette tape, though.

War may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, it is always evil. Never a good. We will not learn how to live in peace by killing each other’s children.

It’s not so much that we’re afraid of change or so in love with the old ways, but it’s that place in between that we fear… It’s like being between trapezes; it’s Linus when his blanket is in the dryer. There’s nothing to hold on to.
— by Marilyn Ferguson. Not at all relevent to my life, but a good quote nonetheless. I like the Peanuts reference.
